South Africa is fortunate to
have some of the most beautiful hotel and guest house
accommodation in the world. Some of the best accommodation in
South Africa can be found in Cape Town, the Garden Route and the
Winelands of the Cape. Guest house and hotel accommodation in
South Africa are usually of a very high standard. Accommodation
in South Africa is rated by the Tourism Grading Council of South
Africa to ensure quality accommodation throughout the country.
There are different types of accommodation in South Africa. Some
of these accommodation types include hotel accommodation, guest
house accommodation, self catering accommodation, safari/game
lodges, luxury villas and apartments, country houses, beach
holiday vacation rentals, farm accommodation and many more. All
these accommodation types in South Africa makes South Africa a
truly remarkable holiday destination for both business and
family holiday travel.
The Western Cape is one of the most visited areas in
South Africa. Cape Town is the capital of the Western Cape area
and in Cape Town accommodation options are endless. Most of the
larger hotel groups are based in Cape Town, but you will also
find smaller boutique hotels or guest houses in and around Cape
Town. Most of the hotels in Cape Town have views of
either Table Mountain or the ocean. This makes Cape Town
accommodation sought after all year round. Hotels and guest
houses in Cape Town are often booked out months (even a year) in
advance. Between the months of October to April each year (high
season for tourism) it is often impossible to find accommodation
in Cape Town at short notice. It is therefore important to book
your accommodation in Cape Town (for both guest houses and
hotels) well in advance. Some of the areas in and around Cape
Town that offers luxury accommodation options include Camps Bay,
Sea Point, V&A Waterfront, Tamboerskloof, Oranjezicht and the
Gardens. Tamboerskloof is one of the areas in Cape Town
that offer real great accommodation. Besides good accommodation
in Tamboerskloof, there are also many good restaurants and art
galleries to visit. Tamboerskloof is situated in the upper Cape
Town area and offers some great views of the Cape Town bay area.
The accommodation in Tamboerskloof is also slightly less
expensive than those of the more exclusive Camps Bay, Clifton
and Bakoven areas of Cape Town.
The Winelands areas are all hidden gems in terms of
things to do and places to see. The cape winelands region offers
a wide variety of accommodation options to suit all guests and
visitors to the area. Some of these areas include Stellenbosch,
Franschhoek, Paarl, Wellington, Constantia, McGregor, Hermanus,
Robertson and many more.
McGregor near Robertson (and a wine route in it’s own
right) is fast becoming a weekend hideaway to weary Cape Town
families. McGregor is a small town with many great restaurants,
art galleries and wine estates to visit. During winter months
you can sit in front of a fireplace in the many restaurants and
enjoy a glass of wine while you watch the world go by. McGregor
offers a wide variety of accommodation options. There are some
beautiful self catering cottages in McGregor, but guest house
accommodation is widely available too. It might be worth booking
way in advance as accommodation in McGregor is limited –
especially over weekends. Most guest houses in McGregor are
quite small (2 -4 rooms). Visit this beautiful part of the
Western Cape and Cape Winelands for great breakaways during the
year.
Hermanus is also known as the Whale Capital of the South
Africa and home to the best land based whale viewing in the
world. Hermanus also forms part of the Cape Winelands area and
boasts with some of South Africa’s best Chardonnay and Pinot
Noir wines due to the cooler air. Accommodation in Hermanus are
difficult to find all year round as it is a popular beach
holiday destination in summer, but guests also flock to Hermanus
during the winter months to view the great whales. Hermanus
offers all types of accommodation including hotels, guest
houses, boutique hotels, self catering cottages and apartments
and villas. During the year Hermanus offer guests many festivals
and events. The old harbour of Hermanus also has some great
restaurants and a pub with arguably the best ocean or bay view
in the whole of the Western Cape. The sunsets are really
beautiful. There is also some great golfing to be had in
Hermanus. Book your Hermanus accommodation today and be swept
away by the natural beauty of this part of the country. Hermanus
is less than 2 hours drive from Cape Town and about 45 minutes
from the Cape Town International Airport.
Stellenbosch is the second oldest town in South Africa.
The Stellenbosch Wine Route is also the first and oldest wine
route in South Africa. The historic Dorp Street in Stellenbosch
boasts the most national monuments in one street in the whole of
South Africa. In and around Stellenbosch accommodation comprises
of luxury hotels, guest houses, wine estate accommodation, self
catering apartments and many more. The University of
Stellenbosch is also well known and has many students from
Europe. There are many guest houses and hotels in Stellenbosch.
Taking into account that the university of Stellenbosch hosts
many conferences and events it is still very important to book
and confirm your accommodation way in advance. There are a host
of many great golf courses around Stellenbosch. During the
summer months the village and old part of Stellenbosch has
street / sidewalk cafe’s that are open until late in the night.
Some of the art galleries, boutique shops and book shops are
also open till late in the evening. This makes Stellenbosch an
ideal base for guests who enjoy the finer things in life.
Stellenbosch has the oldest country inn within South Africa. The
D’ouwe Werf Country Inn Hotel in Church Street, Stellenbosch
still has the original basement. Stellenbosch is also the ideal
base to explore the wine route. Take a Stellenbosch wine tour
where you will be collected from your guest house.
The French Huguenot village of Franschhoek is also known
as the Gourmet Capital of South Africa. When visiting
Franschhoek you will be forgiven for thinking that you might be
somewhere in France. French names of establishments are abound
and most guest houses and hotels in Franschhoek has French
names. Many of the restaurants in Franschhoek have French names
as well. The main road of Franschhoek has many international
award winning restaurants. Most of the Top 20 restaurants in
South Africa are situated in and around the village of
Franschhoek. The wine route of Franschhoek is well known.
Franschhoek offers many interesting festivals and events
throughout the year. The Franschhoek Bastille Festival is
probably the highlight on the events calendar. During the month
of December there is he Franschhoek Champagne Festival. During
winter you also have the Franschhoek Uncorked event when most of
the new vintages are released and tasted for the first time.
Franschhoek is a small town. Accommodation is not as widely
available as in the Stellenbosch area. Bookings for all hotels
and guest houses in Franschhoek are thus essential. During the
summer months Franschhoek has many repeat visitors that often
book and confirm their accommodation a year in advance. It is
thus important to book your Franschhoek accommodation as soon as
possible. Franschhoek looks forward to welcoming you!
The Garden Route of South
Africa includes the towns of Plettenberg Bay, Knysna,
Wilderness, Sedgefield, George, Mossel Bay and Oudtshoorn. All
of these towns and areas are well known holiday destinations.
The Garden Route is also the closest area from Cape Town where
you will find authentic, Big 5 safari and game lodge experiences
and accommodation. As you drive from Cape Town on the N2 highway
the Garden Route Game Lodge will be the first of these game
reserves. On the Garden Route you will find a wide variety of
accommodation types. The towns along the Garden Route are mostly
small, so the Garden Route accommodation will be mostly in the
form of guest houses and self catering establishments. The
Garden Route is well known for its forests, golf courses and
scenic coastline.
On your way from Cape Town the first of the bigger Garden Route
towns are Mossel Bay. Situated halfway between Cape Town
and Port Elizabeth, beautiful Mossel Bay is a coastal village
and harbour of the World Famous Garden Route. This popular
holiday town is surrounded by a sunbathed peninsula and the
refreshing waters of the Indian Ocean. It is a busy summer
destination as well as an ideal winter retreat. It is blessed
with a mild climate all-year round but its most important
feature is its status as the historical capital of the Garden
Route. Well-traveled pleasure boats dock regularly as well as
other international seafarers using the modern docking
facilities. Mossel Bay is a rapidly growing tourist destination
as more and more travelers are discovering the Jewel of the Cape
Garden Route. Mossel Bay is sportsman's and waters sport
enthusiast's paradise, it has a very wide variety of adventure
sports facilities as well as sport of the conventional type,
such as golf, squash, tennis, bungi and bridge diving, indoor
heated pools, horse riding to name but a few. And if you're into
water sports, there is some of the countries most adrenalin
induced activities available - such as, shark cage diving, ship
wreck diving, snorkeling, power boating and others. Mossel Bay
has a lovely Casino, called the Garden Route Casino. There are
also some beautiful golf courses in the Mossel Bay area. Your
accommodation in Mossel Bay varies. You have the option of guest
house, hotel and self catering accommodation in Mossel Bay. The
town of Mossel Bay is quite close to some of the other holiday
villages.
Although it is not the official capital of the Garden Route,
Knysna is seen by many people as just that. If you look at
the Garden Route as a whole, Knysna is one of the most central
of the towns and offers lots to see and do. It is home to the
Knysna Lagoon, Knysna Heads and the famous Knysna Oyster
Company. There are lots of exceptional accommodation offers in
Knysna. Guest houses in Knysna are of a very high standard.
Knysna also offers some truly amazing golf accommodation
resorts. Pezula and Simola are but a few of these golfing
resorts in Knysna. Year round accommodation in Knysna is quite
easy to come by. There are many guest houses, villas, self
catering accommodation and hotels in Knysna. Knysna is so
popular that 2 teams (Denmark and Japan) have made it their home
during the 2010 World Cup. The town of Knysna is built around
the Knysna Lagoon. The annual Knysna Oyster Festival is hosted
during the winter and guests come from far and wide to attend.
The Knysna elephant park is a must visit experience during your
stay. It is situated half way between Knysna and Plettenberg
Bay. There are a host of real good restaurants in the Knysna
area. You can also go on a sunset cruise on the Knysna Lagoon.
For the more adventurous – why not rent a houseboat to cruise on
the Knysna Lagoon? Whatever you decide to do and wherever you
decide to stay, Knysna is a town for everyone.
The town of Oudtshoorn is also known as the ostrich
capital of the world. In Oudtshoorn you can have great fun and
ride an ostrich. This has caused many a laughter in the past.
Oudtshoorn is also home to the famous Cango Caves. Close to
Oudtshoorn there are also some safari lodges where you can
choose to visit as a day visitor, but also to stay over if you
choose to do so. There are not that many accommodation options
in Oudtshoorn. It is advisable to book in advance to avoid
disappointment. Oudtshoorn is about a 4 to 5 hour drive from
Cape Town and is situated on the longest wine route in the
world.
George is halfway between the
towns of Mossel Bay and Knysna. George is also home to the
famous Fancourt Golf Resort. George has many hotels to choose
from. Most guest accommodation in George is situated close to
the town centre. However, you need a car while you are there as
George also has one of the longest main roads in South Africa.
Restaurants, shops, galleries, etc are strung along this road.
As far as budget goes the accommodation in George are more
affordable than those of Knysna, Mossel Bay, Wilderness and
Plettenberg Bay simply because it is not that close to the ocean
as the others. That does not mean that you should not book your
accommodation in George in advance. Due to the many golf courses
in the region the accommodation in George is sometimes fully
booked – even in winter.
Addo is an area in the Eastern Cape Province very well
known for its game viewing and safari lodges. The well known
Addo Elephant National Park is situated there and now is also
home to some really good big 5 safari lodges. Addo also offers
guest house accommodation for those on a budget. Most of these
guest houses in Addo can arrange game viewing excursions to some
of the safari lodges in the area. Addo is also close to the Port
Elizabeth International Airport. There are many daily flights
