The area of Durban North is only 15 minutes drive north of the city of Durban and is regarded as quite an upmarket area. Most of this beautiful part of Durban was once a coastal dune forest system and there are still parts of it preserved in the Mangrove Swamps, and the Umgeni Bird Park bears testimony to the number of birds attracted to the Durban North area. The Durban North area has recently been through a boom. Much of Durban’s big business has moved out to the more modern business complexes and what was once Umhlanga Rocks Village with a sprinkling of cottages, hotels and guest houses, is today a thriving suburb and the playground of young and old who come here for the pristine Durban beaches, malls and fresh air.   The Durban North main beach near Umhlanga Rocks is one of only 24 beaches in South Africa with Blue Flag status. Seven of the blue flag beaches in South Africa are situated in the Durban area.
