Guests arrive at Johannesburg International Airport.
Collect your hired car at the airport before you travel
in a south easterly direction to the Drakensberg
Mountains, so named by the early Dutch Settlers for
their resemblance to the ridges of a dragon’s back.
The steep ridges of the mountains were formed by the
headwater erosion of rivers which separate South
Africa’s Highveld Plateau from the coastal lowlands.
The Champagne Sports Resort is situated in the Central
Drakensberg with sweeping views of the Champagne and
Cathkin Peaks.
The afternoon is spent at leisure, going for a hike or
just relaxing in this area of scenic delights. Overnight at the Champagne Sports Resort.
Breakfast is followed by a tee off at the resort course.
The course is fairly open but with many hazards.
The perfectly manicured kikuyu fairways are generously
wide and bordered by light rough and many varieties of
trees.
This is not to say that the course is easy though – the
84 bunkers that line the fairways and guard the bent
grass greens will punish misdirected shots.
Water hazards are prominent and the course becomes
especially tricky in the wetlands.
The first is the signature hole of the course, at six
hundred and five meters it is the longest par five in
South Africa.
The afternoon is spent relaxing. Overnight at the Champagne Sports Resort.
After breakfast its check out time and you make your way
south traversing the KwaZulu Natal midlands en route to
the sub tropical South Coast, where endless golden
beaches line the Indian Ocean and many championship
courses await.
After check in at your hotel and some time for lunch,
you tee off at the San Lameer course.
Situated in a coastal wetland the course is challenging,
for virtually each hole is protected by a water hazard.
Often ranked as one of South Africa’s top 10 courses,
great care has been taken in ensuring the course blends
in well with the natural surroundings.
Nature lovers are sure to find the course a delight,
with 195 different indigenous bird species as well as a
troop of Impala that grace the area. Overnight at San Lameer.
After breakfast a short drive leads to the Southbroom
Golf Course.
A seafront course with lush vegetation, where numerous
species of small game and bird life create the perfect
backdrop to a great round.
The first hole is an excellent start, a tricky par 4 to
test your opening skills.
The short par 3, 4th hole will stop you in your tracks
as it is by far the most talked about hole on the
course.
It covers part of the sand dunes that protect this
magnificent coastline and on rare occasions you can
watch the dolphins play or a whale basking in the warm
Indian Ocean currents.
During the afternoon you are free to visit some craft
markets where some of the finest local artisans display
their wares, before returning to San Lameer. Overnight at San Lameer.
The Wild Coast Sun golf course is on the agenda for
today.
An interesting and challenging course designed by Robert
Trent Jones, with a superb setting on the Wild Coast.
The course was opened in 1983 and has since been ranked
in South Africa’s top 10 on numerous occasions.
Amongst the many fine holes of the course, the 12th
deserves specific mention as it plays across a valley
with one of the most breathtaking views in Africa.
During the afternoon you can enjoy a horse driven
carriage ride on the spectacular beach before returning
to San Lameer. Overnight at San Lameer.
You make your way north through small coastal towns and
traverse the Port of Durban, which is South Africa’s
largest.
We enter Zululand, home to the proud Zulu Nation, once
led by the legendary King Shaka.
Devote some time to experience the rich culture and
traditions of one of Africa’s proudest nations at
Shakaland.
Shakaland is built on the site where the original Zulu
clan settled in the 18th century.
The village was used in the epic Shaka Zulu film.
The cultural experience highlights the traditional
accommodation, food preparation and social structures
which are traditionally adhered to by the Zulus.
It is also a showcase for the traditional dress, weapons
and dance of this, Southern Africa’s warrior nation.
During the late afternoon you make your way to the
coastal town of Ballito. Overnight at the Boat House or similar.
Tee off at the Zimbali Golf Course during the morning.
Zimbali is a relatively new course, but has in its short
existence established a reputation as a championship
course with magnificent vistas of the Indian Ocean.
Designed by the former South African and British Open
golf champion, Tom Weiskopf, this course which
encompasses links, parkland and coastal vegetation is
sure to challenge both novice and experienced players.
The afternoon is spent relaxing on the shores of the
Indian Ocean. Overnight at the Boat House or similar.
