 ABOUT

The Garden Route Game Lodge is set against the backdrop of the majestic Langeberg mountain range. Garden Route Game Lodge guards the entrance to South Africa’s world famous Garden Route Coast. Only 3.5 hours drive from Cape Town, this malaria free, private game reserve is home to an abundance of animal and bird life including the Big 5. Visitors to the Garden Route Game Lodge can enjoy game viewing in open 4x4 landrovers. Guests to the big 5 Garden Route Game Lodge can also expect luxury accommodation and a memorable dining experience in our Boma restaurant. Our friendly staff and management are there to take care of your every need to complete your unforgettable Garden Route safari.

The Garden Route Game Lodge was started in 1999 as an ambitious project to restore an area of once degraded farmland to its former glory and stock it with game that previously occurred there. This malaria free, big 5 family owned and operated private game reserve is home to an abundance of animal and birdlife including the big 5. Visitors to the Garden Route Game Lodge can enjoy excellent sightings of lion, cheetah, elephant, buffalo, giraffe, white rhino, zebra, wildebeest, kudu, bontebok and a variety of other antelope species.

Accommodation at the big 5 Garden Route Game Lodge is offered in two types of units. Our 16 spacious Main Lodge rooms at the Garden Route Game Lodge combine luxury and comfort with an African theme. Complete with en-suite bathrooms, the lodge rooms lead onto a west facing balcony which offers breathtaking African sunsets all within steps of the sparkling pool. Our 18 superbly appointed luxury thatched chalets offer exclusivity, comfort and spectacular views of the waterhole. The chalets at the big 5 Garden Route Game Lodge offers intimate contact with nature and complete privacy, ideal for honeymoon couples.

Dining at the big 5 Garden Route Game Lodge is a relaxed affair where guests get a chance to discuss the day’s game viewing and make new friends. Dinner in our African Boma provides guests with a unique dining experience where a hearty menu of tasty traditional cuisine is presented on open coals in African pots. Our friendly and attentive waiters are on hand to explain the menu or advise you on our selection of fine South African wines. Alternatively the breathtaking Serengeti’s Restaurant offers guests a more interactive dining experience where safari cuisine is prepared by our chef to your liking. The expansive wooden decks overlooking the valley below allow guests to relax and unwind to the sounds of the African night.

At the big 5 Garden Route Game Lodge morning and afternoon game drives are led by experienced and knowledgeable game rangers who share their knowledge of big game as well as the many other antelope species, birdlife and local African folklore. Garden Route Game Lodge is home to 7 lions which originally came from Shamwari game reserve in the Eastern Cape. When the Garden Route Game Lodge was started in 1999, provision was made to accommodate the lions and provide them with a sanctuary where they would be protected. So it was with great fanfare that the lions arrived at the Garden Route Game Lodge on the 31 March 2000. The lions have adapted well to their new environment in the Western Cape. The elephants at the Garden Route Game Lodge were trans-located from the Kruger National Park and arrived at Garden Route Game Lodge in 2001. They are orphans that survived the last cull that took place in the Kruger National Park in 1994 after which culling was discontinued. The Cheetah Conservation Centre was established in 2002 to provide visitors to the Garden Route Game Lodge (and the Garden Route in general) with an insight into the plight of this critically endangered species. A percentage of revenue from each guest that stays at the Garden Route Game Lodge is allocated to the purchase of collars for cheetahs in the wild. The Garden Route Game Lodge also boasts a reptile centre.

The children’s program at the big 5 Garden Route Game Lodge has been designed to stimulate interaction between children and nature. Children are taught to be aware of our environment and the many lessons nature can teach us while having fun at the same time. Children of all ages are welcome at the Garden Route Game Lodge and are specially catered for. Our program operates over weekends and during school holidays. Some of the programs include bush survival skills, children’s game drives and guided bush and insect walks – all overseen by our professional and caring staff.

The conference centre at the Garden Route Game Lodge provides an ideal setting for your next conference, bush breakaway, team building or group incentive weekend. Built from stone and thatch, the conference centre blends in with the natural surrounds of the Garden Route to complete this unique setting. This air-conditioned conference facility comes fully equipped with all the necessary AV equipment and can comfortably accommodate up to 60 conference delegates. The nearby breakaway lapa overlooks a waterhole and provides conference delegates with a chance to view some wildlife while enjoying a refreshment break. Apart from taking in the breathtaking scenery, tailor-made activities can be arranged to further enhance your bush experience.

Nestled on the edge of a breathtaking valley, Serengeti’s and the adjoining Labola Chapel provides a unique and romantic African setting for you to celebrate your South African bush wedding. Designed to blend in with the surrounding landscape, our stylish new wedding venue has been carefully constructed using natural materials such as stone, thatch, wood and glass and brings together the elements of earth, fire and water with taste and style. The wedding venue at the big 5 Garden Route Game Lodge is equipped to accommodate 120 guests but can seat up to 200 guests with a dance floor. The wedding venue is totally climate controlled throughout the year with 3 fireplaces for those chilly winter evenings.
