Precautionary measures against Robbery

At your Accommodation In an Emergency
 
 WHEN OUT & ABOUT
 
Plan your visits and travel routes in advance.
Get advice from the accommodation establishments or the local tourist information offices or SA Travel Desk.
Supply a family member with a copy of your itinerary, s that they can get hold of you in case of an emergency.
Where possible, use registered, qualified & recognised tourist guides – taxi drivers are not registered guides.
Do not attract unwarranted attention by openly displaying cash, expensive jewellery, cameras or other valuables.
Carry your wallet, credit cards, passport & other travel documents in your inside & front pockets.
Avoid carrying large sums of money, particularly foreign currency - always leave 1 credit card in the safe where you are staying, if possible.
Carry certified copies of your passport, identity & travel documents.
Avoid strange, dark, poorly lit or isolated places.
Avoid travelling & exploring on your own.
If something or someone makes you uneasy, leave the scene immediately.
Stay alert - do not sleep when travelling on public transport.


 

 AT YOUR ACCOMMODATION
 
Do not leave your luggage & belongings unattended or with unknown people.
Store valuables in the hotel’s safe at reception or in your room’s safe.
Always keep your hotel room & sliding door or window locked at night or when you are not there.
Never open your room door unless you have identified the person who had knocked on your door.
If in doubt contact reception for verification.
It is advisable to hand in the keys to your room at reception when going out.
Do not entertain the advances of undesirable, strange or suspicious persons, report such people to management.
Use the main entrance of the hotel when you arrive late at night.
Always make sure that you have the address & telephone number of the hotel / guest house you are staying at.

Do not stop and talk to strangers - ask for directions at an information centre.

Do not let others see you with large amounts of money or valuable items.

Do not offer to exchange large notes for smaller notes.

Do not allow yourself to be drawn to false competitions in the streets.

 IN AN EMERGENCY
 
Try to talk your way out of the situation.
Do not resist unless you are absolutely sure it will lead to your escape.
If circumstances dictate that you must not resist, concentrate on nothing a physical description of your attacker.
In a robbery or hijacking, do as you are told.
Keep your hands still and visible. If you need to undo a seatbelt, ask first.
Remember you can replace your valuables or vehicle, but not your life.
